Specialist Gender Assessment
consideration for recommending hormone treatment
We provide specialist gender assessment for young people and their family. A full gender assessment report is provided and recommendations made. Where appropriate an onward referral to an associated endocrinologist can also be made.
Specialist gender assessment typically takes 6 appointments and includes a full report, however, the session number may vary depending on the client’s needs.
Our expertise in the assessment of gender identity development in children and adolescents is drawn from many years of experience working in this area, both in the UK and Ireland. Our practice is guided by WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) Standards of Care and NHS England Service Specifications for Child and Adolescent Gender Services.
Specialist Psychological Support
extended gender exploration work
This service covers those who have completed a specialist gender assessment and require ongoing gender support. Gender Support sessions take place when further space for exploration and ongoing review is needed.
This service also includes psychological therapy for a specific mental health need such as anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, emotional regulation difficulties, self-harm, behavioural problems, school refusal or social withdrawal.

Clinical Psychology
Systemic Family Therapy
Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
For some young people additional support with their mental health is appropriate to consider alongside their gender needs. In such situations additional mental health input from an associate Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Systemic Family Therapist or Clinical Psychologist can be arranged. It is important that each young person’s specific circumstances and needs are considered when developing an individual care plan and access to mental health care can be an important aspect in this. This multi-disciplinary approach is vital when holding a young person’s holistic needs in mind.
Dr Aidan Kelly is a clinical psychologist registered in the UK with the HCPC (PYL32755). He began working in the NHS in 2009 and since then has worked across children and family services as well as with adults. Since 2016 he has been working at the Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) at the Tavistock Centre, in the area of transgender health care for young people, under 18 years old.
From his experience Aidan understands the importance of providing timely and developmentally appropriate care for young people who are questioning their gender. He works closely with endocrine colleagues, as well as other relevant professionals, to support the young person along their individual pathway.
